ID GRAIN: driving force behind chickpea selection and varietal innovation in France

ID GRAIN, an important player in the production and marketing of chickpeas in France and Europe, invests in the selection of new varieties adapted to the expectations of producers and consumers.
The research work is carried out at our breeding station based in Outarville in Beauce. The varieties developed are then tested in micro-plots and in the field in the main chickpea production regions.
Our goal is to offer farmers high-performing varieties adapted to French soil and climate conditions, while meeting the quality and consistency requirements of manufacturers. Beyond improving yield, we are making significant progress in enhancing the resistance of our varieties to anthracnose (Ascochytasis).

In 2025,, ID GRAIN a filed a new variety of chickpea in the French catalogueIt has thus confirmed in trials its very good resistance to anthracnose. This advance demonstrates our expertise in the genetic improvement of chickpeas. This new variety of Kabuli chickpeas will complement our current range consisting of BADIL (early variety, productive and not very susceptible to greening) and POPLAR (mid-late variety with large grains).

At the same time, ID GRAIN continues its commitment to developing innovative sectors, such as that of DESI chickpeas with variety OLGAselected for its agronomic performance and technological qualities. OLGA constitutes a major asset to meet the growing demand for a chickpea that is both adapted to the French climate and valuable to the agri-food industry as a source of protein-rich flours.

At its selection station in Outarville, ID GRAIN also works on the selection of dried beans and contributes to strengthening the French dried vegetable sector.
