Performance and Competitiveness for ID Grain varieties

Black Sunflower

Black sunflower varieties are primarily used for oil production in human consumption.
Their oilcakes are particularly appreciated in animal feed.

ID GRAIN pays special attention to varieties with a specific fatty acid profile, a very high oleic acid content or other fatty acids with particular nutritional qualities.

Helianthus anuus, Asteraceae (Asteraceae – Compositae)

Striped sunflower varieties with small grains (type S) and medium-sized grains (type L) mainly differ in grain size, yield, and specific uses.

Striped sunflower with small grains is particularly appreciated for bird feeding. Due to its small size, it is ideal for bird seed mixtures. These varieties can also be used in certain specific industrial applications such as dehulling.

Striped sunflower varieties with large grains (type XL), are often used for human food applications, such as sunflower seed snacks and the production of sunflower kernels due to their suitability for dehulling. Their high protein content is valuable for livestock feed manufacture and food ingredients for human consumption.

Helianthus anuus, Asteraceae (Asteraceae – Compositae)

White sunflower grains (type W) are much rarer than striped or black grains, accounting for only 2% to 3% of global production.

White sunflower grains provide a nutritional advantage as they contain higher amounts of vitamin E, magnesium and protein. They are also rich in fiber.

Helianthus anuus, Asteraceae (Asteraceae – Compositae)

Our black sunflower varieties meet the specific needs of the bird feeding and human food sectors.

We are working on improving the agronomic performance of our varieties and adapting them to industrial needs.

Learn more about sunflower

A low-maintenance and rotational crop

The use of sunflower seeds fits perfectly into agricultural rotations, especially in systems dominated by cereals. Sunflowers improve soil structure thanks to their deep taproot system and help reduce diseases in subsequent crops.

As a spring crop, the sunflower cultivation helps break the cycle of persistent weeds such as ryegrass and foxtail, while facilitating the introduction of hoeing.

Sunflowers are well-suited to temperate climate regions and, thanks to selected sunflower seeds varieties, require low inputs and water. This makes sunflower crops an ideal solution for less fertile soils or high summer temperatures while ensuring high yields in various agricultural environments.

At ID GRAIN, we take pride breeding and marketing sunflower seeds tailored to the requirements of producers and manufacturers. Our research structure and partnerships with leading technical institutes and genetics suppliers enable us to offer high-performance varieties in terms of yield, disease resistance and grain technological quality.

Sunflower grains

Sunflower cultivation is versatile, with grains used for human food, animal feed as well as various industrial applications.

    • Human consumption: Sunflower grains are widely consumed in the form of sunflower oil, which is valued for its nutritional properties rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Whole or hulled grains can also be consumed directly as a snack.
    • Animal feed: Sunflower oilcakes are highly valued by livestock feed manufacturers. Sunflower seeds, especially the striped or white varieties, are also used for bird feed, both cage and sky birds.
    • Industrial uses: Oil- and protein-rich grains are also used for the production of biofuels and food ingredients.
